How to Make Your Workplace More Secure

Security in the workplace isn’t something that should be overlooked. Depending on your industry, you may use expensive tools or equipment that could be damaged or stolen. Even more importantly, your employees’ well-being could be at risk from people trying to steal money or products.
It’s important to make sure that your workplace is a safe place to work and that you have appropriate security measures in place. Here are a few things to consider when it comes to security.
Secure Doors and Locks
One of the most important things to sort out first is to make sure your doors and windows are secure. Depending on your industry, this might include investing in garage doors that can be opened and closed remotely, so you can better control vehicles coming in and out of your property.
Use padlocks on fence gates to keep trespassers out. While people can cut through padlocks, it’s much better than nothing at all, as people might see an open gate as an invitation.
You should also make sure that you have some kind of lock on the doors and windows of the property. Internal locks can make sure that sensitive areas are also more protected from members of the public or visitors.
Security Guards
In some industries, it can be beneficial to have the extra layer of security provided by a security guard. Retail security guards aren’t necessarily armed, but they do act as an extra layer of protection and deterrant for theft.
A security guard can man the doors or areas of the store where you sell expensive products, and they can make sure that nobody attempts to shoplift. They can also temporarily hold someone and call the police.
Video Surveillance
When it comes to physical security methods, video surveillance is king. People will look out for cameras and, more often than not, a camera will prevent someone from commiting a crime because there’s a much higher risk of them being caught. High-tech cameras can capture someone’s features and allows the authorities to find them.
Even if someone trespasses, steals, or commits another crime on your property, the video footage will be useful. As well as helping the police potentially make an arrest, you can also use this video footage to prove what happened to insurance companies, so it’s easier to make a claim.
Cybersecurity
As well as physical security, another way that businesses can be more secure is by beefing up their cybersecurity systems and processes.
A lot of business-related crime in the past decade or so has been along the lines of hacking and cybercrime. You can use firewalls to prevent viruses and other attacks, and you should train employees to be able to identify suspicous emails.
If they receive these emails, it’s best not to click on them and, even if they read them, they shouldn’t respond or click any links. Instead, make sure to report the email and do regular checks on your systems to make sure they’re clean.
