Wii Brochure/Magazine Insert Version (10 pages + cover)

Client: Nintendo of America Inc., Redmond, Washington | Submitted: August 08, 2008 | Updated: November 20, 2008

This insert for Nintendo Power magazine was one of the most successful projects I worked on as an in-house designer at Nintendo. At first it was intended only to be a pull-out insert for the magazine. However, several other departments at Nintendo wanted to use it, and it was repurposed and reprinted several times over for use as a stand-alone brochure. I'd guess that several million were eventually printed.

Original direction was that the brochure should be a comic. The writer and I pushed for something much simpler, and non-linear. I felt for the brochure to succeed, it needed to be kind of a "trojan horse", since it was included in the magazine, yet was not really meant for the reader of the magazine, who were already familiar with the Wii. Instead, it was something they could leave on the coffee table or hopefully give to a household member, preferably one with buying power. It should go without saying, but these days with consumers bombarded with marketing messages, it needed to avoid immediatly getting tossed, so it had to also be cool enough for someone to actually want to keep it. Making it fun by using friendly illustration and typography helped accomplish this.
