Through this project, I learned that environmentally conscientious design stretches far beyond LEED guidelines, as there is a larger demand beyond using recycled materials and efficient systems in buildings and communities. To reduce the negative aspects of our society, there needs to be lifestyle changes. As designers, I have learned that it has become our job to demonstrate that these changes are not sacrifices but rather can be enriching elements of life while providing a cleaner, healthier environment.

Working in an interdisciplinary team, my group explored methods of creating a university district for Spokane, Washington that would result in a community that extends beyond smart growth. Our team conducted public interviews, talked with the Spokane City Health Department, researched alternative energy sources, and investigated the design of a collaborative and educational community. Our research and design, based on our beliefs of positive contributions to Spokane, was presented to government officials, local business leaders, and city residents. Our work will be referenced in future community development meetings, including the EPA conferences with the City of Spokane in January 2007.
