The quote on the original design was hand-lettered also but the publisher felt it wasn't as readable as they'd like, hence the out of place typeset quote. But I still like it overall, although it is a bummer about that award badge.
Another early layout had semi-hidden curse words buried into the scratches and scrawls of the lettering. The book is filled with expletives and I figured the main character would write obscene things on his school notebook. But that was nixed by the A.D. and wasn't even shown to the sales/marketing departments.
