The artist formerly known as Banksy

"... The future of the notoriously secretive spray painter and the multimillion-pound industry he has created were in doubt after a newspaper claimed to have unmasked him. Banksy, it suggested, is the pseudonym of Robin Gunningham, 34, a former public schoolboy from Bristol."

Folks always get mad when something underground goes mainstream. People constantly complain when their favorite musicians take the big label deal, so why is Banksy any different?

I don't really enjoy people making political art a for profit business, but I can't fault them either. If there is a market for people like Banksy (who has done work for Puma) or Shep Fairey (who is currently exploiting Obamamania) and they can make a small fortune, it is probably a small price to pay if they alienate some of their hardcore fans so they can ensure their family is set for a long time.

I always laughed at Che Guevara t-shirts being sold. The irony in selling shirt with a communist on it for capital always makes me smile. Irony!
