currency designs for New York City neighborhoods
| November 16, 2009

Design students in Jason Santa Maria's Communicating Design class at SVA "pulled a neighborhood out of a hat, and were asked to research their neighborhood to determine what characteristics should be represented on its currency."

We really enjoyed looking through the variety of concepts and seeing how the culture of different city neighborhoods can be evoked through paper currency designs.

This assignment also reminds us of the beautiful pre-inflationary German currency we came across awhile back. It would be so interesting if all cities adopted their own unique currency designs. In a recent Fast Company article, "The Brooklyn Dollar: What Would Neighborhood Currency Look Like?", it specifically highlights "hyper-localized currencies" such as BerkShares in Massachusetts, Community Currency used in Humboldt County, California, the Toronto Dollar, and The Ithaca Hours notes. Could individual NYC currencies are a possibility in the future?

(For the top Biscos currency designs, SVA student Eric St. Onge took a slightly different approach and put focus on Chelsea Market alone. The Chinatown currency was designed by Colleen Miller.)
