First and foremost, Jim Harter is an "image archivist," a self-defined profession that has produced more than 15 major collections of engravings and rotogravures from the 17th through the early 20th centuries for Dover and several other publishers.
In his earlier years, he created psychedelic posters mainly for the Vulcan Gas Co. in Austin. He also spent time in Europe studying surrealism with Ernst Fuchs.
“Taking up collage led to an adventure, which took me to Europe to find inspiration and engravings, to San Francisco where I became friends with Wilfred Satty and David Singer, and to New York where I began a career as a collage illustrator.” -JM
He now lives in San Antonio where he continues to create original collages from old engravings, which can be purchased and downloaded on his stock images website:
