I.D. Magazine is folding (born in 1954)

Unfortunately one of my favorite design magazines will be ceasing publication. I. D. Magazine, a constant source of inspiration for students and design professionals, has announced that their upcoming January/February 2010 issue will be their last.

Below is an excerpt from press release:

"...Ceasing publication of an iconic brand like I.D. is never an easy decision, but there are several forces that have worked against its sustainability. Certainly the downturn in print advertising has contributed to this decision, but other factors include the fragmentation and specialized information needs of I.D.'s core readers (product designers) and the plethora of information resources available to them – some for free (online and B2B) and others that are highly specialized and targeted to specific industries served..."

The first issue of Industrial Design magazine was designed by Alvin Lustig in 1954. Steven Heller writes about Lustig and the Industrial Design magazine legacy in the book Design Literacy. Kind Company's Alvin Lustig site has an online collection of Lustig's magazine covers.
