The Zero Dollar Bill: Laura Gilbert
| October 07, 2008

I just saw a segment on CNN about the artist Laura Gilbert and her creation of the "Zero Dollar," and couldn't pass on posting about this. Laura Gilbert was passing out 10,000 fake "zero" dollars in front of the New York Stock Exchange today (signed limited editions). The art piece is about "the destructive role of many financial institutions, and the decline of U.S. currency to the point of seeming worthlessness." What perfect timing!

Laura Gilbert is a gallery artist specializing in painting and printmaking. She has an upcoming exhibition at The Grady Alexis Gallery in Manhattan, opening  October 24th, which includes "The Zero Dollar" prints. The title of the show is appropriately titled, "Money, Men, and Mischief."  Jon Coffelt is the show's curator. The show will run through Nov. 22, 2008.

Here is the Laura Gilbert/Mad as Ever segment on CNN, with Jeanne Moos:

That is both funny and distressing at the same time!

I've updated this with the video clip from the CNN segment I watched.

Various Artists

1978: Cildo Meireles (*1948) Brazilian Artist produces the pieces Zero Dollar and Zero Cent. They consist of bills and coins produced and distributed by the artist. They all bear the numerical value zero, thus feigning to be worth even less than the paper on which they were printed or the metal on which they were struck.

If this is what an ARTIST does, we need to redefine the word. Funny is for comedians, to make a political point is for politicians.
