As mentioned in my earlier post, I was on a mission to find the book World Paperback Cover Design by Hiroshi Eguchi. Out of lack of time, I tried to buy this title at Asahiya bookstore, close to my office. My luck it was out of stock. But a man at the register line gave me a tip that the Kinokuniya store near Rockefeller center was closing and having incredible discounts (shh. don’t tell anyone, all books are 50% off, as a result of the new location near Bryant Park). So, I took a longer lunch detour than usual. And in the end I didn’t end up with the book I wanted----but I found a few other titles I’m thrilled to have in my collection. The image shown is from the interior of a new book in my collection titled, Book Design of Graphic Designers in Japan by Mikado Koyanagi. The partial viewed covers on the left-hand side and right were designed Takashi Kono. Takashi Kono (1906-1999) is best known for his work for Nippon magazine and the movie production company, Shochiku Kinema. The book also highlights the book design work of: Yusaku Kamekura Tadashi Ohashi Hiromu Hara Kohei Sugiura Kiyoshi Awazu Ikko Tanaka Gan(Iwao) Hosoya Shigeo Fukada Yoji Kuri Hiroshi Manabe Ryohei Yanagihara Tadahito Nadamoto Seiichi Horiuchi Aoi Huber Kono Akira Uno Column 04 from the publisher, Pie Books: “A great book design collection produced in 1960s in Japan. Most celebrated 16 graphic designers are featured in one volume.“
