Iranian Typography

I LOVE PERSIA!
"One of the qualities that makes current Iranian graphic design unique is its typography. The country has a rich history of visual arts and moreover the better part of this heritage consists of calligraphy. Throughout the times calligraphy has been inventing and reinventing itself and has influenced other forms of art. The incorporation of calligraphy into Islamic architecture is a fine example of this union. In recent times these treasures of beauty and harmony have inspired painters, sculptors, and in particular: graphic designers."
My Dad was assigned to Iran in the late 90s, I had a chance to go, but regrettably declined because I wanted to go to San Francisco instead. Now I am kicking myself because I could have gotten some kickass posters...AARGH!

The Codex Seraphinianus

I've been waiting so long for a copy of the Codex to fall into my lap, and FINALLY, I found a copy on Ebay last week for $90- Sacre Bleu!

I got it in the mail yesterday and, although missing the dust cover, was amazed that the book was in pristine condition...some googly eyed rhino plant god must be smiling down on me...YAY!!!

"The Codex Seraphinianus was written and illustrated by Italian graphic designer and architect, Luigi Serafini during the late 1970's. The Codex is a lavishly produced book that purports to be an encyclopedia for an imaginary world in a parallel universe, with copious comments in an incomprehensible language. It is written in a florid script, entirely invented and completely illegible, and illustrated with watercolor paintings."

"Since the 1960s, graphic designer Keiichi Tanaami has garnered worldwide attention for his radical and stylish visual expression. His unique use of color and the Tanaami psychedelic style in the motif of dreams, goldfish, pine trees and other elements have proliferated themselves in countless posters, films, paintings, objets d'art, art books and other works.

Death by Design

An Art director complains about the overuse of "empty art" in today's graphic design, such emptiness includes the overuse of skulls, antlers, doodles etc.

"I like illustration but it just seems that lately being a great designer really translates to being able to draw some sketchy hipster doodles."

hmm...
