Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty
Even if you have no interest in fashion, GO to the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met Museum, through August 7, 2011.  This show completely transcends fashion, in terms of content (McQueen's designs are self portraits as much as clothing)  and exhibition design (the sets and musical accompaniment are haunting).  TIP:  Go first thing in the morning to avoid the lines.

(I made this watercolor after seeing the show - a gown of red and black ostrich feathers and glass medical slides painted red.)

Modern Life: Edward Hopper & His Time

Saw this beautiful show with an artist friend last night at the Whitney (runs through April 10, 2011).  After an hour or so of immersion in that amazing Hopper light, we stepped out of the museum and everything just looked like a Hopper Painting - lone figures in coffee shops, illuminated apartment windows, streetlights casting shadows on passers by. I just wanted to rush home and paint!

The Conformist
An intensly moving film on many levels, Bertolucci's "The Conformist" is also one of the most visually stunning movies I've ever seen.  This 1971 classic is in re-release right now at Film Forum in NYC as well as other theaters around the country.

Inspired by....the Circus
A friend invited me to the Big Apple Circus last night, something I haven't done since I was a kid.  I made a series of really quick (1-minute or so) sketches using the Brushes app for the iPhone. Nothing like getting out of your usual environment to get inspired! Mobile devices make sketching in public so easy & discreet. Everyone thinks you're checking your email.
