Music Video Director Playlist: Spike Jonze
Add to Folder | Comments (0) | November 15, 2008

Director Spike Jonze has been in the news lately because of his work on the upcoming live-action film adaptation for Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are." He is also working on a new music video for Weezer titled "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived."
Here's a music video playlist for director Spike Jonze:

Weezer - Buddy Holly, from 1994

The Breeders - Cannonball, from 1996

Björk - It's Oh So Quiet, from 1996

Pavement - Shady Lane, from 1997

Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice, from 2001

Sabotage hasn't made it to the MTV site yet, but thanks to You Tube here it is:

The launch of MTV's online site for music videos has helped the brand go back to its roots. For the last 10 years I felt that MTV moved so far away from the music video business with all of its reality television shows. It is a great addition to be able to get a blast from the past and browse through the growing archives on MTV.com.

Daido Moriyama's "Bye-Bye Polaroid" Exhibition
Add to Folder | Comments (1) | November 09, 2008

Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama has an upcoming

exhibition in Kyoto including approx. 600 polaroid photographs.

All of the polaroids were taken in Tokyo last year between the

months of April and August.

The exhibition is titled "Bye-bye Polaroid" which seems fitting

with the slow disappearance of the Polaroid film brand.

"Snap the shutter and get a photograph in a minute!"

was the underlying concept and stance behind using  polaroid,

rather like the instant rice TV commercial "Step in the front door

and have rice in two minutes!" For more than half a century, polaroid

enabled the dream for instantly visible pictures to become reality. I have

to write this in the past tense because Polaroid ended the production of

film this summer. So I thought about holding an exhibition of polaroids to

say good bye to the medium personally..."

(from the Taka Ishii Gallery site)

"bye-bye polaroid" will open November 15th and with run

though December 13, 2008 at the Taka Ishii Gallery in Kyoto.

Antoine's Alphabet jacket design by Peter Mendelsund

While in the Corner Bookstore last week for Michael Storrings' book signing, I saw the book Antoine's AlphabetWatteau and His World by Jed Perl. The combination of the uncoated paper stock, cover image, and clean typography, created a beautiful package. But it may have been the placement of an old-style letter "A" that won me over.

Dear Zachary movie poster illustrated by Evan B. Harris

While looking at the latest trailers added to apple.com, I spotted the fully illustrated movie poster for an upcoming documentary Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son about his Father. When I first saw the illustration at a very small size, I thought it may have been the illustration work of Marcel Dzama (maybe because of the muted color palette). But the illustration and beautiful hand lettering was created by Oregon-based artist Evan B. Harris. His work is represented by Johansson Projects and Cerasoli. Without knowing anything about the film prior to seeing the poster, now I am interested.

The film Dear Zachary, directed by Kurt Kuenne, is now playing in a limited amount of theaters and locations.

Below is the really depressing, but compelling trailer for the documentary:

IndieWire interviewed the director Kurt Kuenne last month.

New Pixar movie trailer: Up
Add to Folder | Comments (3) | November 08, 2008

I'm very excited for the upcoming Pixar film Up

But I will be waiting a long time before this hits theaters (May 29, 2009).

"Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. Up takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures" — Sneak Peak via Pixar

The same director of Monsters Inc., Pete Docter, will direct Pixar's 10th feature film. (Monsters Inc. was voted the "Best Pixar Movie of All Time" by NY Mag's Vulture)
